Charlie Kirk, 31, founder and CEO of Turning Point USA, was assassinated on September 10, 2025 at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. A single .30-06 bullet struck him in the neck from approximately 142 yards away, fired from the rooftop of the Losee Center. He was pronounced dead at Timpanogos Regional Hospital.
Tyler James Robinson, 22, of Washington, Utah, surrendered the following day. He is charged with aggravated murder. The state is seeking the death penalty. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 18–22, 2026.
The pattern: An unsecured rooftop. A young shooter with no criminal record. A rifle from a family member. Conservative family background, political shift through online radicalization, furry subculture ties, no manifesto. This happened 14 months after the same failure nearly killed Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. The rooftop was not secured at Butler. The Downgrade That Mattered: Greg Shaffer was not just “an FBI agent.” He was an HRT operator (FBI’s most elite tactical unit), JTTF supervisor in the Dallas Division (covering North Texas including Sherman/Grayson), NCTC program manager (the nerve center of US counter-terrorism), and had international intelligence postings. He spent 20 years protecting against exactly this scenario.
His replacement team includes a man with Marine counter-terrorism and operational intelligence training (Flood) who spent 14 years selling veterinary equipment, a DFW narcotics cop (Harpole), and a business consultant from Ernst & Young listed on the company paperwork (Sardina). The one-event volunteer (Cutler) had 30 years of SWAT and OUR connections.
The question is not “were they incompetent?” Flood literally has CT training. The question is: was the security deliberately structured to create a gap that a Shaffer-level operator would never permit? Shaffer would never leave a rooftop open after Butler. Someone needed him gone.
